Covering Drugs is a 140-page resource guide listing key surveys, reports, data sets, studies, research hubs, and other information useful to journalists reporting on drugs and alcohol. People working in research, policy, education, and direct service roles may also find it helpful.

Organized by topic, each section addresses questions like:

·      What are the main substance use surveys?

·      Who’s tracking what’s in the drug supply?

·      What data exists about nonfatal overdoses?

·      What are the benefits of SSPs?

·      How are treatment outcomes measured?

·      What services help support recovery?

Written by Susan Stellin, MPH, this project is supported by a 2025-2026 Reynolds Journalism Institute fellowship. Thanks to Wally Krantz at Outside Order for designing the Covering Drugs logo and guide and Graham MacIndoe for the photography.
